Is the P320 FCU/Striker System the Root of All Evil?

Not that I can see proven… Now for some subjective opinions… (Apology up front)

After watching this P320 debacle for the past 2 years, I’ve decided to point out several observations… This list comes from 46 years of working with firearms on the Job (Armed Sec, LEO (Uniform and PC), Competitive shooter since 1980 (Bullseye, PPC, B-Cup, NRA Action, USPSA, SCSA, etc.) Licensed Gunsmith NYS (80s). Training Counselor . LE Instructor , Certified Coach, CRSO, NROI, blah, blah, blah.

Point One…

Condolences to the survivors of those that died. Second, sympathy to those that have been injured.

Point Two…

Crap Kydex holsters with too much pinch in the trigger guards are a piece of this… and 90% of makers are selling crap. Proper molds should have 100% filled trigger guards. Same thinking goes for trigger locks that put metal rods or bolts through the trigger guard. Wow…

Point Three…

Anyone that carries a P320 in their appendix is exposing themselves to risk. That’s DA/SA, SA Auto, or DA Revolver country. We knew that in the 80s and not much has changed. Add to that, trigger guard and a string type devices. Sorry, not for me. Get real, legitimate holster training from a CERTIFIED CCW or Personal Protection Instructor. That means only one brand of class. 3-Hour State Permit classes don’t even come close, no matter who the instructor is.

Point Four…

Trigger “blade” safety is not infallible due to environmental things (threads, fabrics, straps, poor retention mechanisms, errant Digitus Secundus). Fully charged strikers have been around for years, Gun design is like car design. Every year some product designer is hellbent to create the newest, fanciest, fastest, sexiest car. Now look at the last 5 years of firearm ads on line or in print. Same with Golf Clubs.

Point Five…

Then there are the other human condition gems…

NEVER take a holster or belt off with a loaded firearm in it. (USPSA, SCSA, NRRA, State LE Regs. Standard NYS Academy training in the 80s. Most department policies. Many other states too. The latest Air Force UD issue was avoidable through training. Now it looks fabricated, aka somebody got locked up. ” Make It Safe” is simple. Safe Direction (or Armory Chute), Watch fingers, Mag out, Lock open, round falls to ground, no childish flip it in the air immaturity nonsense. Eyeball the chamber. Transfer it properly, NOT loaded, chambered, in holster. THEN pick up the round on the floor.

Point Six…

Now let’s discuss the FBI Report…. Poor Methodology, No control sample. Some of the social media folks stick things in the trigger guard/ assembly which in essence is simulating a partial trigger pull. I don’t buy them as proof of other than levering the trigger rearward. I watched the ENTIRE Sig Guy Breakdown, 3D printed FCU/Striker Safety interface viewer, mechanics, watch the striker release activation from the frame. Then check your 320 using his frame/ trigger criteria. For me, I watched Bruce Gray’s Videos. Then I got out my depth micrometer, calipers, magic markers, and ran it myself. Answered my questions. If in doubt call SIG for a Repair Call Tag. Let them check/fix it. If you are not an experienced TRAINED armorer or gunsmith, well you know where this goes….

Triggers NEVER get changed/ modified in defensive guns. There is a significant number of “experienced” (yeah right) gun owners that want a “trigger job” in a self-defense/ carry/ duty gun. Don’t trust ’em. When I hear the expression, “This is my EDC gun, and it has a ____ (nonOEM) trigger”, I cringe. Unfortunately, I have direct knowledge of people with 1911, Glock, Beretta, Walther, and other brands having UDs, Full-Auto, or malfunctioning guns after self-induced or custom mods, some with serious injuries. Just learn to shoot, practice safely and enjoy the range, often. Range and competition guns are where mods should be/ stay, if the shooter is expert enough to gain real benefits. Like golfers, shooters want to mess with their clubs too much. The fewer changes and variables, the more consistent the results. Coaching 101…

As an aside, in our training equipment we have 3 P320s (M18, X Compact, X5 Legion 5″), 3 p365s (2 XL and a Fuse), Glocks, Walthers (Q5, Xesse), Tanfos (LF SA), Berettas, Steyrs, S&W M&P, S&W 5906, 6906, 3913, 639, P220SM, p226, P210a (Target and Carry) and on and on. The p320X5 (a competition gun, flat trigger, swapped FCU for rear safety) has 15000+ rounds through it, never an MF. The M18 is 2k. Range gun. No MFs ever. P365s 15+ rounds through the 3, no MFs. All the other brands have similar numbers.

All of our P320 FCUs are post upgrade born. Action work is FACTORY only. Guns are cleaned and not overlubricated.

Point Seven…

Proper gun handling is how you don’t get injured. Proper carry mode (including garments) is another accident reduction method. This is the number one area of safety in Holsterland. Fingers, fabrics in holsters where firearms should be alone. 90% of folks that put a shirt or t-shirt over a carry gun are unsafe on the range. We see it and correct it every day. Properly made and tested holsters reduce accidents. Nothing in the holster (including retention mechanisms) should go inside the outer plane of a trigger guard. There are plenty of other types of retention available. Training and safety discipline could have eliminated a number of the UDs floating out there.

Now for the painful part…

SIG (my first one was p225 in 1893) makes good products. P320 mess is partially self-induced, by not communicating enough, providing public videos, info, and detailed analysis to the public. There are a lot of reasons to keep things tight (lawyers, juries, press, etc.), but there are other considerations as well. Finally, Wk. 3 August 2025, the right engineering came out. Each of us will have our own opinion.

SIG needs to do more research, research causative elements (including suspected and external ones) and put out videos, drawings, 3D models, etc., and possibly peer reviewed research showing what happened, likely causes, and fixes, LE agency equipment choices training and policies, customer processes, holster specs, internal upgrades or solutions (why or why not) this is SIGs responsibility). Do whatever is needed to close this loop. It’s just icky, and unnecessary.

Last thought…

And any owner should ask themselves. Am I doing everything in my power to not contribute to a UD? with some firearms, an empty chamber makes sense. Cocked and locked on 1911/2011 type Self-defense carry guns, does not for me either. SERPA holsters either. Striker guns in Appendix Holsters don’t either. With some firearms, empty chambers do make sense to me.

We don’t have all of the answers and have questions like everyone else. Sometimes, the solutions come from last learning, some from the better mousetrap…

At the end, please be safe, help less experienced folks at the range, be courteous, and yes… Have some fun…

Let’s keep Florida safer—together.

GunSafety4U is beyond proud to announce that our Training Materials and Methods have completed the full approval process for both our FDACS G28 Initial Qualification and FDACS G4 Annual Requalification courses, now officially green-lit by the NRA Law Enforcement Division for use by Florida K/G agencies. This was made possible thanks to the NRA HQ team rolling these programs to NRA Law Enforcement Instructors and NRA Affiliated Agencies that submit their materials and methods for Quality review.

Embarking on your first firearms training session can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Whether you are seeking to enhance your defensive skills, gain confidence in handling a firearm, or simply learn the fundamentals, preparation is key to making the most of your training experience. At GUNSAFETY4U, one of the nation’s premier NRA-certified training facilities, we take pride in equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to responsibly and confidently use firearms.

In this article, we’ll guide you through what to expect, how to prepare, and the essential steps to ensure your first session is safe, productive, and empowering.

1. Understand the Goals of Firearms Training

Firearms training is about more than just learning to shoot. It emphasizes safety, control, and defensive readiness. At GUNSAFETY4U, we focus on building a strong foundation that includes:

Proper handling techniques. Our Practice prides itself on next-level training of safe and capable firearm handlers, on a broad spectrum of firearms.

Safe firearm storage and maintenance practices.

Defensive mindset development for NRA CCW and Personal Protection Coursework.

Legal and ethical considerations of firearm use, purchase, sale. Civics are discussed and stressed in Concealed Carry training.

Your first session is an opportunity to learn essential skills that will serve you in everyday life, whether for recreational shooting or personal protection.

2. Research Your Training Facility and Instructor

Choosing the right training facility is critical to a successful learning experience. At GUNSAFETY4U, we pride ourselves on being an NRA-certified training facility, a distinction held by only a select few in the nation. Our expert instructors, including Geoff Davis, bring decades of experience and a passion for empowering students.

Familiarize yourself with your instructor’s background and the facility’s training philosophy. To learn more about our team and approach, visit the GunSafety4U About Us or Geoff Davis’ Bio pages.

3. What to Expect During Your First Session

Your first firearms training session will likely cover the following:

Safety First

Safety is always the top priority. Expect a thorough introduction to firearm safety rules, including how to handle, store, and transport firearms responsibly.

Basic Handling Techniques

You’ll learn how to grip, aim, and shoot properly. This includes stance, breathing techniques, and trigger control to build accuracy and consistency.

Understanding Your Firearm

Instructors will help you get familiar with the components and functions of your firearm. If you don’t own one yet, GUNSAFETY4U offers loaner firearms for use during training.

Live Fire Exercises

Depending on the course, you may have the opportunity to practice shooting in a controlled environment. Instructors will provide feedback and guidance to improve your technique.

For an in-depth look at what to expect, this informative guide provides additional insights.

4. Gear Checklist: What to Bring to Your Training Session

Being properly equipped ensures a smooth and enjoyable session. Here’s what you’ll typically need:

1. Firearm and Ammunition

If you own a firearm, bring it along with the appropriate ammunition. Ensure both are in excellent working condition. If you’re undecided about purchasing, we can provide guidance and loaner options at GUNSAFETY4U, at NO cost.

2. Eye and Ear Protection

Invest in high-quality protective gear to safeguard your vision and hearing. This is a non-negotiable aspect of firearm training.

3. Comfortable Clothing

Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid loose or overly restrictive attire. NO open necks, please, hot brass hurts. Safety First!

4. Notebook and Pen

Taking notes during your session helps reinforce key concepts and techniques. We provide all materials, including “parking lots”.

5. Valid Identification

Most training facilities, including GUNSAFETY4U, require valid ID for registration.

6. Water and Snacks

Staying hydrated and maintaining energy levels will help you focus during the session.

For a comprehensive checklist, check out this helpful resource.

5. Mental Preparation: Confidence and Focus

Training with firearms requires a clear and focused mind. Here are some ways to mentally prepare:

Stay Open to Learning

Everyone starts as a beginner. Approach the session with a willingness to learn, ask questions, and absorb as much as possible.

Focus on Safety

Memorize the four fundamental safety rules:

Always keep your firearm pointed in a Safe Direction.

Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Always keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it.

Know your target and what lies beyond it.

Manage Anxiety

It’s normal to feel nervous before your first session. Remember, the instructors at GUNSAFETY4U are here to guide and support you every step of the way.

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

To maximize your training experience, steer clear of these common pitfalls:

Overloading Yourself: Avoid bringing unnecessary equipment or trying to learn too much at once.

Ignoring Instructions: Listen carefully to your instructor and follow their guidance.

Neglecting Safety Gear: Never compromise on protective equipment—it’s essential for your well-being.

Skipping Pre-Session Research: Familiarize yourself with the training process and expectations in advance.

By avoiding these mistakes, you’ll set yourself up for success.

Gun safety is a critical skill for anyone who owns or handles firearms. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gun owner, proper training ensures not only your safety but also the safety of those around you. All Gun Owners should start with Group Classroom training, it provides structure, socialization, and standardized outcomes. After becoming well grounded in the Basics, more specialized skills coaching can assist the shooter in attaining more personalized goals. Customized gun safety coaching, such as the programs offered by GUNSAFETY4U, stands out as a more effective alternative for comprehensive competition and defensive firearms training.

In this article, we’ll explore why tailored coaching is superior to one-size-fits-all courses, discussing the benefits of individualized coaching and how it better equips students with the skills necessary for responsible and advanced firearm operation.

1. Personalized Attention Enhances Learning

On every recreational shooter’s journey, basic industry standardized skills is good for the student and the community. Learning range etiquette safety protocols, basic operations, and maintenance allows each student to meet the expectations of fellow participants in the community. SAFETY FIRST MEANS EVERYONE FOLLOWING THE SAME RULES, EVERY TIME. Personalized and Customized skills coaching from our GUNSAFETY4U team assists advanced shooters or students with specialized needs to progress in the most effective way, based on their requirements. This approach allows our team to assess each student’s skill level, confidence, and goals.

Interactive Learning: Personalized coaching fosters an interactive environment where students can ask questions without hesitation. By focusing on Outcomes, we minimize time to objective, extraneous time and costs.

Tailored Curriculum: The coaching process is designed to target specific areas of improvement, ensuring maximum learning efficiency, based on the Discipline or Environment that our students participate in.

Requirements Driven: Our Coaching plans are based on NRA Coaching Processes, documentation, and standards. We coach competitors (Precision, Action, Adaptive, Seniors, and Juniors , professionals (Law Enforcement, Military, and Armed Security), and shooters that are inwardly competitive (Be the Best That you Can) enthusiasts. Many shoot matches, some never will. Our job is to gain an understanding of where our students wish to go, and help them get there.

We build on Basics: We begin with standardized time-tested NRA Coursework. from First Steps Classes and Women-on-Target Clinics, through Basic Shooting all the way to Advanced Personal Protection Courses. Separate from our Regular classes, we also assess students for applicable experience and training from Youth Activities (4-H, Scouts, Clubs), Military and Explorer training, Law Enforcement training and Competition experience. We assess where the student is (at no cost to coaching students) and determine the most efficient way forward for our students to achieve their goals.

2. Real-Life Defensive Scenarios in Time Tested NRA Coursework.

Defensive firearm handling requires understanding real-life situations. Competition shooters seek real-life time and accuracy results, in compressed schedules. Once our students have the requisite skills, we can use customized training, which emphasizes practical, scenario-based exercises that are often absent in generic courses. Many defensive marksmanship and competition shooters want to improve both accuracy and time utility. Some wish to improve mobility and freestyle performance.

Simulated Situations: Students practice responding to defensive challenges, enhancing their decision-making under pressure. Action Pistol Competitors respond to “game” or freestyle challenges in near real time. Drills and on-range work are key to these type of improvements.

Risk Mitigation: Real-world training helps identify and mitigate potential risks, a critical skill in defensive firearm use. In Competitive shooting, Safety must be ensured while Time Utility Training helps reduce clock and “Par” times.

For insights into the importance of scenario-based training, check out this article on the benefits of gun safety training.

3. In-Depth Safety Protocols

While all gun safety courses address basic rules, customized coaching dives deeper into safety protocols tailored to individual use cases. Whether it’s learning safe storage methods at home or handling firearms in specific environments, personalized training can cover it all.

Home Safety Strategies: Coaching includes best practices for securing firearms, especially in households with children.

Range Safety Techniques: Students learn proper range etiquette, ensuring the safety of themselves and others during practice.

Explore the comprehensive range of safety protocols taught at GUNSAFETY4U.

Owning a firearm comes with serious responsibilities. Whether you’re a seasoned gun owner or a novice, maintaining safety is crucial to prevent tragic accidents. Unfortunately, many gun-related incidents stem from common safety mistakes that are entirely avoidable. In this guide, we’ll highlight the top 10 firearm safety errors and provide practical tips on how to avoid them.

GUNSAFETY4U, one of the few NRA-certified training centers in the U.S., is committed to educating responsible gun owners. To elevate your skills and ensure safe handling, check out the courses offered by GUNSAFETY4U.

Why Gun Safety Matters

Firearms are tools that require respect, knowledge, and caution. According to research from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, preventable gun-related injuries and deaths remain a significant public health issue in the U.S. Even experienced gun owners can fall into bad habits that compromise safety. By recognizing and correcting these mistakes, you can contribute to a safer environment for yourself and those around you.

The Top 10 Common Gun Safety Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

1. Ignoring the Muzzle Direction Rule (Always Keep Your Gun Pointed in a Safe Direction)

The muzzle should always point in a safe direction. Accidents often happen when gun owners unintentionally point their firearms at themselves or others.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Be conscious of where your muzzle is pointing at all times. (Muzzle Discipline)

Practice situational awareness, especially in confined spaces.

2. Poor Trigger Discipline (Always Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger, Until You Are Ready to Shoot)

One of the most critical firearm safety rules is to keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot. Unfortunately, many people develop the habit of resting their finger on the trigger, increasing the risk of accidental discharge.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Always keep your trigger finger straight , up on the frame or receiver, and outside the trigger guard.

Only move your finger to the trigger when you have aimed at your target and are ready to shoot.

3. Failing to Treat Every Gun as Loaded (Always Keep Your Gun Unloaded Until You Are Ready to Use It)

Many gun accidents happen because people assume their firearm is unloaded. This misconception can have deadly consequences.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Always assume every firearm is loaded until you’ve personally verified otherwise.

Double-check the chamber and magazine before handling or cleaning the firearm.

REMEMBER: Defensive firearms are usually kept loaded at all times, and require the most stringent safe storage and safe handling practices.

Tip: Schedule a safety class at GUNSAFETY4U to learn best practices for handling and verifying unloaded firearms.

4. Improper Firearm Storage

Improperly stored firearms are one of the leading causes of accidental shootings, especially involving children. Leaving guns unsecured is not only dangerous but can also lead to legal consequences.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Use a gun safe or a locked cabinet to store firearms.

Utilize gun locks and store ammunition separately.

Check out advanced storage solutions at GUNSAFETY4U.

REMEMBER: In Florida, It’s the Law!

For more on firearm safety data, visit the Johns Hopkins Gun Violence Research Reports.

5. Lack of Regular Maintenance

Firearms require regular cleaning and maintenance to function correctly. Dirt, debris, or worn-out parts can lead to malfunctions and accidents.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Clean your firearm after every use and inspect it regularly.

Take a firearm maintenance course at GUNSAFETY4U to learn proper techniques.

Stainless Steel RUSTS in Florida.

6. Skipping Firearm Training

Many gun owners assume that once they’ve handled a firearm, they don’t need further training. However, skills can degrade over time, and laws frequently change.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Join a Local Club (WAC, FFA, MGAC), or use a Commercial Range, at lease every 60-90 days.

Take refresher courses periodically to maintain your proficiency.

Enroll in courses at GUNSAFETY4U for personalized training.

According to Johns Hopkins Annual Firearm Data, lack of training contributes to preventable firearm injuries.

7. Using the Wrong Ammunition

Using incorrect ammunition for your firearm can lead to malfunctions, damage, or catastrophic failure.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Always check the caliber marking on your firearm (usually on the Barrel Hood) and match it with the ammunition (Box and Headstamp).

Consult your firearm’s manual for approved ammunition types. Many firearms get accelerated wear or damage from +P or +P+ ammo.

8. Firing Without Proper Eye and Ear Protection

The noise and recoil from firearms can cause permanent damage to your hearing and eyesight if you’re not adequately protected.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Invest in quality ear protection (Electronic earmuffs or earplugs) and safety glasses. Electronic hearing Protection is far superior and allows you to hear conversations while shooting.

Music listening “Noise Cancelling” equipment is NOT safe on the range. They do not handle the concussive shock that hearing protection devices do.

“Foamies” are better than non-Electronic “Cans” (Earmuffs)

Eye Protection can be Prescription glasses. Safety glasses with protective side guards may be required by some disciplines.

Never shoot at the range without these protective items.

9. Neglecting to Clear the Chamber After Use

One of the most dangerous mistakes is assuming the chamber is empty after removing the magazine. Many firearms can still fire with a round in the chamber.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Always rack the slide or bolt and visually inspect the chamber after removing the magazine.

Make this a habit every time you handle your firearm.

10. Overestimating Your Skill Level

Confidence is essential, but overconfidence can be dangerous. Trying to perform advanced maneuvers without proper training can lead to accidents.

How to Avoid This Mistake:

Recognize your limitations and seek training to improve your skills.

Advanced carry and defensive courses at GUNSAFETY4U can help elevate your capabilities in a safe environment.

REMEMBER: All of these rules apply to Airguns as well.

FAQs: Common Gun Safety Mistakes

1. Why is trigger discipline so important?

Trigger discipline is crucial because accidental discharges can occur if your finger is on the trigger before you’re ready to shoot. Practicing proper discipline can prevent these incidents.

2. How can I safely store my firearm at home?

Invest in a quality gun safe, use trigger locks, and store ammunition separately. Check out storage solutions at your local gun shop.

3. What should I do if I’m unsure about the type of ammunition to use?

Refer to your firearm’s manual or consult a professional. Using incorrect ammunition can cause damage to the firearm and potentially harm the shooter.

4. Is training necessary if I already know how to shoot?

Yes, continuous training is essential to keep skills sharp and stay updated on the latest safety practices. Contact GUNSAFETY4U for basic and advanced courses.

5. How often should I clean my firearm?

Ideally, clean your firearm after every use, especially if you’ve fired a large number of rounds. Florida humidity makes it even more important. Regular cleaning prevents malfunctions and extends the life of your firearm.

6. Can I practice firearm handling at home?

Yes, but make sure your firearm is unloaded, and there’s no live ammunition nearby. Close the Blinds. Consider using snap caps for dry fire practice.

Why Understanding Firearm Terminology is Important

For new gun owners, understanding firearm terminology isn’t just about sounding knowledgeable—it’s about safety. Knowing the difference between terms like “semi-automatic” and “fully automatic,” or “Double-Action vs. Single-Action” or understanding how different types of firearms and ammunition work, can significantly impact your safety and those around you. Moreover, with laws and regulations frequently changing, having a solid foundation helps you stay compliant and make informed decisions. GUNSAFETY4U teaches all students the information needed to purchase a firearm that suits your needs.

Before diving into the glossary, let’s take a look at some of the most critical aspects of firearm basics.

Firearm Basics: Key Concepts

1. NRA Firearm Safety Rules

Before handling any firearm, it’s essential to follow these fundamental safety rules:

Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

Always Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.

Always keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it. (Defensive firearms should always be ready to use).

Know your target and what’s beyond it.

For hands-on safety training, visit GUNSAFETY4U to book a session with our NRA-certified instructors.

2. Types of Firearms

Firearms are generally categorized into handguns, rifles, and shotguns:

Handguns (e.g., pistols, revolvers): Small, portable firearms typically used for self-defense.

Rifles: Long guns designed for accuracy, commonly used for hunting and sport shooting.

Shotguns: Firearms that fire multiple pellets, useful for hunting and home defense.

>Understanding these distinctions can help you choose the right firearm for your needs.

Essential Firearm Terminology: A Glossary for Beginners

Below is a glossary of key terms that every new gun owner should familiarize themselves with. For a more comprehensive list, check out the U.C. Davis Firearm Glossary.

Ammunition (Ammo)

The complete cartridge that includes a casing, primer, gunpowder, and bullet. In Shotgun Shells, a wad and Shot, or a Slug are used as projectiles in the place of a bullet.

Action

The internal mechanism that fires, a cartridge. Common action types include Semi-Automatic (SA, DASA, DAO, Striker), Single-Action Revolvers, Double Action Revolvers), Bolt, Lever, and Pump (Slide), and Break.

“Assault Weapon”

A political term used by political activists in some US States to restrict firearms ownership. They don’t really exist legally in the US Civilian Space. Historically,” Assault Weapons” were fully automatic machine guns flame throwers and explosives used to lay down cover fire in Military operations.

Barrel

The long metal tube through which the bullet travels when fired.

Bolt Action

A type of firearm action that requires manual operation of the bolt to load and eject cartridges. Usually Rotational or Straight Pull.

Caliber

The internal diameter of a firearm barrel, measured in inches or millimeters (e.g., .45 caliber, 9mm).

Cartridge

A complete unit of ammunition, consisting of the case, primer, powder, and bullet.

Clip vs. Magazine

A clip holds rounds together for quick loading into a magazine (Storage area), while a magazine stores ammunition and feeds it into the firearm in a single unit.

Double Action

A firearm mechanism where pulling the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer.

Fully Automatic

A firearm that continues to fire as long as the trigger is held down. Typically regulated by federal law (National Firearms Act). For more, see ATF Firearms Guide.

Gauge

A measurement used for shotguns; the lower the number, the larger the barrel diameter.

Hammer

The part that strikes the firing pin, igniting the primer to fire a round. It may be visible or internal to a firearm.

Muzzle

The end of the barrel where the bullet exits the firearm.

Semi-Automatic

A firearm that fires one round per trigger pull and automatically reloads the chamber. Learn more about how it works here.

Trigger

The mechanism that initiates the firing process.

Safety

A mechanism designed to prevent accidental firing. Always double-check that the safety is engaged when not in use. Remember Safeties are mechanical devices that can fail.

Recoil

The backward and upward force experienced when a firearm is discharged.

Sights

Devices on the firearm used to aim. Can be iron sights, scopes, or red dot optics.

Suppressor (Silencer)

A device attached to the barrel to reduce the sound and flash of a fired round.

Common Misconceptions in Firearm Terminology

1. Semi-Automatic vs. Fully Automatic

Many people confuse semi-automatic firearms with fully automatic ones. A semi-automatic firearm requires a trigger pull for each shot, while a fully automatic firearm will continue firing as long as the trigger is held down. Semi-automatics are legal in most states, while fully automatic weapons are heavily regulated.

2. Clip vs. Magazine

New gun owners often use “clip” and “magazine” interchangeably, but they are not the same. A clip holds ammunition together for insertion into a magazine, whereas a magazine stores and feeds ammunition into the firearm.

On July 1, 2023, Florida became the 26th state in the U.S. to implement a permitless carry law, allowing individuals to carry a concealed firearm without the need for a state-issued permit. This law, often referred to as “constitutional carry,” has sparked intense debate over its implications on public safety, gun rights, and the future of responsible firearm ownership. Whether you’re a gun owner, a safety advocate, or simply a concerned citizen, understanding the full scope of this law is essential.

What Is Permitless Carry?

Permitless carry, as introduced in Florida, means that any legally eligible adult, aged 21 and over, can carry a concealed handgun without a license or training. Prior to this change, Floridians had to undergo a background check, fingerprinting, and a safety training course to obtain a concealed carry permit. Now, these requirements have been eliminated, raising concerns about the adequacy of gun safety measures.

Permitless carry (only good for Florida Residents while in Florida), had one effect. It removed the legal requirement to be examined and attested to as a safe operator of firearms by one of four types of instructors. Since that training requirement is lower than many states, the effect is negligible.

Obtaining a Florida CWFL (Concealed Weapons and Firearms License) has significant benefits. First, a Permit holder can travel Interstate while carrying their Handgun in 37 Reciprocal States. Second, a holder does not have a 3-Day waiting period to pick up their firearm. Third, many Ranges will allow a permit holder to rent a pistol before they buy one. Fourth, limitations in Federal law regulating the “safe” distance from Schools while in transit do not apply.

While permitless carry advocates argue that it upholds Second Amendment rights, opponents worry that removing these safeguards could lead to an increase in gun-related accidents and crimes. The effects of similar laws in other states offer valuable insights into what Floridians can expect in the coming years.

Potential Impact on Gun Safety in Florida

The new law comes amid already rising gun violence statistics in Florida. Research by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions shows that states with more relaxed gun regulations have experienced a significant increase in firearm assaults. The removal of mandatory training and permitting may inadvertently lead to more individuals carrying firearms without fully understanding how to handle them safely.

Increased Risk of Accidental Discharges

Without mandatory training, the risk of accidental discharges could escalate. Firearm safety courses teach essential skills, such as safe handling, proper storage, and situational awareness—critical knowledge that can prevent accidents.

Public Safety Concerns

Research fromJohns Hopkinsindicates that relaxed concealed carry laws correlate with a rise in gun violence incidents, particularly in urban areas. For Florida’s densely populated cities, the fear is that more firearms in circulation, coupled with a lack of formal training, could lead to higher rates of shootings, both intentional and accidental.

The Importance of Responsible Gun Ownership

While the new law removes formal requirements for carrying concealed weapons, responsible gun ownership remains critical. For those looking to exercise their Second Amendment rights while prioritizing safety, proper training is not just a recommendation—it’s a necessity. GUNSAFETY4U is one of the only Exclusively NRA-Certification Course training centers in the U.S. People from around the world come to train with us because they understand that knowing how to use a firearm safely can mean the difference between life and death.

Why Choose GUNSAFETY4U for Training?

At GUNSAFETY4U, we believe that proper training should not be overlooked, even if the law no longer mandates it. From basic safety protocols to advanced defensive shooting techniques, our goal is to empower you with the confidence and skills to handle your firearm responsibly.

Legal Ramifications of the Permitless Carry Law

While the permitless carry law provides greater freedom, it also places more responsibility on the individual gun owner. It’s crucial to understand that the removal of a permit does not exempt individuals from other legal responsibilities. For instance:

Firearm Storage Requirements

Improper storage of firearms can lead to unintended access, especially by children or unauthorized individuals. Under Florida law, failing to secure a firearm properly can result in criminal liability if an accident occurs.

Use of Firearms in Self-Defense

The Role of Gun Safety in Public Health

Gun safety is a crucial component of public health. Studies have shown that states with higher levels of gun ownership and weaker gun safety laws tend to have higher rates of firearm-related injuries and deaths. For instance, a study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that states with stricter gun laws had significantly lower rates of gun-related deaths compared to states with more lenient laws.

In Florida, where the rate of gun ownership is relatively high, programs like those offered by Gunsafety4U play a vital role in mitigating the risks associated with firearm use. By educating the public on proper gun safety practices, Gunsafety4U helps to reduce the likelihood of accidental injuries and deaths, thereby contributing to overall public safety.
