Course Catalog FAQ

Questions About Our NRA Courses & Instructor Training

Straight answers about becoming an NRA instructor, Florida licensing, and choosing the right course — pulled from the questions we hear most.

You start by completing the NRA Basics course in your chosen discipline (Pistol, Rifle, or Shotgun), then pass Basic Instructor Training (BIT) and the discipline-specific Instructor course. GunSafety4U is led by an NRA Training Counselor who can certify you directly. See our full NRA Instructor Training pathway for prerequisites and pricing.
A Certified Pistol Instructor teaches the foundational Basics of Pistol Shooting course. A CCW Instructor is an advanced credential built on top of that — you must already be a Certified Pistol Instructor and an NRA CCW graduate before taking CCW Instructor Training, which covers concealed-carry mindset, drawing from concealment, and running a CCW qualification line.
A Florida Class G License authorizes a security officer to carry a firearm while on duty. It requires a 28-hour FDACS-approved firearms training course with live-fire qualification. Class K is a separate concealed weapons license tied to specific employment, not the armed-security credential. Our Florida G License course meets the full FDACS requirement.
After completing the standard Range Safety Officer (RSO) course, the Chief RSO Instructor course runs approximately 16 hours over 2 days (or 4 evening sessions). You'll need to demonstrate safe handling across handguns, rifles, and shotguns as outlined in your RSO Handbook before qualifying.
Yes. Every GunSafety4U instructor track — including our Basic Instructor Training — includes specific training on coaching adaptive athletes. Whether you're a student with mobility, vision, or other physical considerations, or an aspiring instructor who wants to teach adaptive shooters, our courses are built to accommodate and support you.
Prerequisites vary by track. Foundational instructor courses (Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun) require completion of the matching NRA Basics course and a live-fire qualification at an instructor-level target. Advanced tracks like CCW, Personal Protection, and Chief RSO require you to already hold the foundational instructor certification. We review your specific background during a short interview before enrollment.
Foundational instructor tracks (Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Chief RSO) are $395 for tuition, books, and range fees. Advanced tracks like Personal Protection Instructor run $425 due to additional course hours. VETS and LEO family discounts are available on every instructor track — contact us for current pricing.
Yes — no prior teaching experience is required. Basic Instructor Training (BIT) covers everything from course ethics and lesson planning to organizing your first class and generating publicity. What you do need is solid shooting fundamentals and the ability to safely demonstrate the skills you'll be teaching.
Basics of Pistol Shooting is the entry-level foundation course covering safe handling, ammunition, and shooting fundamentals — required before any pistol instructor track. Defensive Pistol is an advanced course for trained shooters, focused on close-quarters defensive mindset, presenting from concealment, and stoppage drills under pressure. U.S. citizenship is required for Defensive Pistol due to ITAR regulations.
GunSafety4U's faculty includes NRA-certified instructors with real military, law-enforcement, and competitive-shooting backgrounds, based in Tampa Bay and serving all of West Florida. Browse our full instructor roster or view the complete course catalog to find the right defensive training for your experience level.
